Storing a Collection Safely: Shelves, Cases, and Humidity
Most damage to a stored model collection happens slowly, invisibly, and long before anyone notices — not from a single dramatic accident, but from years of low-level exposure to light, humidity, and temperature swings. The good news is that protecting against all three doesn't require specialized equipment; it mostly requires understanding what actually causes the damage and making a few deliberate choices about where a collection lives.
None of these risks are unique to expensive or rare pieces, either. A budget pocket-scale car sitting on an open windowsill fades exactly as readily as a premium 1:18 showpiece, and a humid garage tarnishes both equally. Because the causes are environmental rather than tied to a model's price point, the same handful of precautions protect an entire collection at once rather than requiring different care for different pieces.

Light and fading
Ultraviolet light breaks down pigments over time, and even indirect daylight through a window delivers enough UV exposure to visibly fade paint over months or years, with reds and yellows typically fading faster than blues and blacks. A display case or shelf positioned out of direct sun exposure — or behind UV-filtering glass or acrylic, which many display cases offer as an option — avoids most of this damage without needing to keep a collection permanently in the dark. Artificial light is a smaller but not zero factor. Standard LED display lighting produces far less UV than daylight or older halogen bulbs, which is part of why LED strip lighting has become the default choice for display cabinets, but "far less" isn't "none" — a case lit continuously for years still delivers more cumulative exposure than one that's only lit while someone's actually looking at it. Humidity and metal parts
Die-cast models are, as the name suggests, largely metal, and metal parts are vulnerable to tarnishing and, in more severe or sustained cases, corrosion when humidity runs consistently high. This matters most in specific environments: an uninsulated attic, a garage that isn't climate-controlled, or a basement prone to dampness are all higher-risk storage locations than a climate-controlled living space. A commonly cited comfortable target for indoor collectible storage is roughly 40–55% relative humidity — not a hard rule for every material, but a reasonable middle ground that avoids both the corrosion risk of consistently damp air and the brittleness that can come with air that's kept artificially bone-dry. Temperature swings and zinc pest
Older die-cast, particularly pieces from decades past made with certain zinc alloy formulations, can be susceptible to a condition often called "zinc pest" (sometimes called "zamak rot" after the zamak family of zinc alloys many die-cast toys were made from) — a slow degradation where impurities in the original casting cause the metal to swell, crack, or crumble over years, sometimes visibly distorting the model's shape or causing panels to split along old seams. It's most associated with certain mid-20th-century production runs, when raw material purity was harder to control consistently across manufacturers, and it's a property of the specific casting, not something that develops in a model that hasn't shown any sign of it after decades on a shelf. Choosing a room, not just a case
The case matters, but the room it sits in sets the baseline everything else has to work against. A climate-controlled living space with reasonably stable heating and cooling is a far easier starting point than a garage, shed, or attic that swings with the outside weather, even before any case, hygrometer, or silica gel enters the picture. Storing pieces away from display, not just on it
Not every piece in a collection lives on a shelf all the time — overflow, seasonal rotation, and models waiting for a restoration all need a storage plan of their own. Acid-free tissue paper, rather than newspaper or standard packing paper, avoids transferring ink or acidic residue onto paint or decals during long-term box storage.
