Shelf Load & Weight Calculator
Enter a shelf's rated capacity, your average model weight, and how many models you plan to display, and see how close you are to a safe loading limit.
Load check
How the check works
The calculator multiplies your average model weight by the number of models to get a total load, then compares it against both the shelf's full rated capacity and a recommended maximum set at a percentage of that rating (80% by default). It also works out roughly how many more average-weight models the shelf could still take before reaching that recommended maximum.
This is a planning estimate, not a structural engineering calculation — shelving material, bracket spacing, wall-mounting method, and how evenly weight is distributed across the shelf all affect real-world safe capacity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why use a safety margin instead of the shelf's full rated capacity?
A rated capacity is usually a manufacturer's tested maximum under ideal, evenly-distributed conditions. Real shelves see uneven weight distribution, occasional bumps, and material aging, so keeping everyday loads to around 80% of the rating (the calculator's default) leaves headroom instead of running right at the limit.
How much do die-cast models actually weigh?
It varies enormously by scale and material — a small 1:64 die-cast car might be 30–60 g, while a large 1:18 model with metal body panels can run 800 g to well over a kilogram. Weighing a handful of your own pieces on a kitchen scale and averaging them gives a far more accurate figure than a rule of thumb.
What if I have models of very different weights on one shelf?
Use the average weight of the actual mix you plan to store on that shelf, or run the calculator per group of similar models. For a shelf holding a few unusually heavy pieces, it's safer to calculate their exact combined weight separately and add it to the estimate for the rest.
Educational tool only. Always follow the shelving or cabinet manufacturer's own rated capacity and installation instructions; this estimate does not replace them.
