Sizing a Display Case to the Collection You Actually Have
Most display-case advice starts from a case — a listing you've already found, asking whether your collection fits inside it. This is the reverse problem: starting from a collection you can count today, and working out what case dimensions actually hold it, rather than guessing at a size and hoping. It's a more useful starting point if you haven't bought a case yet, because it tells you what to shop for instead of what to reject, and it turns "I need a case" into a specific, checkable shopping list: at least this wide, at least this tall, at least this many shelves.
Which model to use as your reference
If every model in the section you're planning is the same scale but not exactly the same real-world size — a mix of compact and mid-size sedans, say — use your largest typical model's dimensions as the reference, not an average. Planning around the largest piece means every smaller model in the collection fits with room to spare, while planning around an average risks the case being genuinely too tight for your bigger pieces even though it works out fine on paper. This mirrors the advice in the case-first version of this problem: measure your widest piece, not a typical one, and let every other model benefit from the margin that creates.
Start with a real count and two measurements
You need three numbers to begin: how many models you're displaying, and one representative model's width and height. For a collection of 40 cars at 1:24, a scale where a roughly 4.5-metre real car converts to a 187.5 mm model and a roughly 1.45-metre real height converts to 60.4 mm — both figures from the scale converter, not measured off any specific model — those two measurements are the inputs the display case planner needs to work backward to a case size.
Worked example: what case fits 40 models today
This is the calculation worth running before you open a single listing, because it tells you exactly what to filter for — a minimum interior width, a minimum interior height, and roughly how many shelves — instead of clicking through cases one at a time and eyeballing whether each one looks about right.
Feed those numbers into the planner against a fairly ordinary case interior — 1,200 mm wide, 900 mm tall, with 20 mm of spacing between models and 25 mm of shelf clearance — and it returns 5 models per shelf: (1,200 + 20) ÷ (187.5 + 20) = 5.88, rounded down. For a 40-model collection, that's 8 shelves (40 ÷ 5 = 8 exactly), and each shelf plus its clearance takes 60.4 + 25 = 85.4 mm, so 8 shelves need 683.3 mm of height in total. Against the 900 mm case interior, that leaves 216.7 mm of spare height — the case fits the current 40-model collection with genuine room left over, not just barely.
What happens when the collection grows
The same case, the same model dimensions, but 60 models instead of 40 (a 50% increase, not an extreme one) needs 12 shelves instead of 8 — the per-shelf count doesn't change, since the case width and model width are unchanged, but 60 ÷ 5 rounds up to 12. Twelve shelves at 85.4 mm each is 1,025 mm of height needed, and the same 900 mm case interior comes up 125 mm short. Nothing about the case changed; only the collection did. This is exactly the scenario the "leave room to grow" advice in most display-case guidance is trying to prevent, and seeing the actual numbers tip from comfortably fitting to falling short makes it concrete rather than abstract: a case sized exactly to today's count has no slack for tomorrow's.
Trading width for height
If floor or wall space favors a wider, shorter case over a narrower, taller one, the planner shows exactly what that trade costs and gains. Widen the same 40-model case's interior from 1,200 mm to 2,075 mm — roughly the width of a long sideboard or a wall-mounted shelving run — and models per shelf jumps from 5 to 10, which drops the shelf count from 8 to exactly 4 and the total height needed from 683.3 mm to 341.7 mm. The collection hasn't changed size at all; a wider case simply needs far fewer, more efficient shelves to hold the identical 40 models. If your space genuinely offers width rather than height, running both options through the planner turns "which shape of case should I get" into a direct comparison instead of a guess.
What spacing actually costs you in shelf count
Spacing between models is a deliberate choice, not a fixed constant, and it's worth seeing what it costs in shelf count before settling on one. Tighten the same 40-car, 1,200 mm case's spacing from 20 mm down to 10 mm and models per shelf rises from 5 to 6 — (1,200 + 10) ÷ (187.5 + 10) = 6.13, rounded down — which drops the shelf count from 8 to 7 and the total height needed from 683.3 mm to 597.9 mm, a genuine 85 mm of height freed up just by tightening the gap between models. That's not free, though: 10 mm between models is noticeably tighter than 20 mm, and whether it's worth the visual crowding to save one shelf's worth of height is a judgment call the calculator can't make for you — it can only show you exactly what each option costs so you're choosing with real numbers instead of a guess.
Two scales sharing one case
A genuinely mixed collection needs its own shelves planned separately per scale, then summed, rather than one blended calculation. Take the 40-car, 1:24 section above (8 shelves, 683.3 mm) and add a second section of 15 cars at 1:18 — a scale where the same 4.5-metre real car converts to a 250 mm model and 80.6 mm tall. Run that section through the planner separately at the same 1,200 mm width and it comes back needing 4 shelves (15 ÷ 4 per shelf, rounded up) and 422.2 mm of height. Combined, the two sections need 12 shelves and 1,105.6 mm of height total — comfortably more than the 900 mm case interior that held the 1:24 section alone. This is exactly why treating "my collection" as one number hides the real requirement when it spans more than one scale: each scale's models have a different footprint, and a case sized for one section doesn't automatically have room for another bolted on afterward.
Building in a growth margin deliberately
Rather than discovering a growth problem after the fact, as in the 40-to-60 example above, it's worth planning for a target count above your current one from the start. If you expect to reach 55 models within a year of buying a case sized for 40, run the planner at 55 instead of 40 when you're choosing a case, and treat "fits 40 comfortably" as a floor, not a target. The cost of over-sizing by a reasonable margin is a bit of empty shelf space for a while; the cost of under-sizing is buying a second case, or worse, cramming an ill-fitting number of models onto shelving that was never planned for them.
Don't forget depth
Everything above sizes width and height — how many models fit across a shelf, and how many shelves stack up — but a case also needs enough front-to-back depth to actually clear each model without an overhang. That's a different dimension from either input the planner uses, and it's easy to forget when a case listing only advertises a width and a shelf count. Check your reference model's own depth (a car's width, front to back, if displayed broadside) against any case you're about to commit to, in addition to running the width-and-height numbers above.
When the numbers say you need more than one case
Sometimes the honest answer, once you run a real collection count through the math, is that no single reasonably sized case holds everything — a much larger collection, or a mix of very different model sizes, can genuinely need two cases, a dedicated shelving wall, or splitting the collection by scale or theme across separate display areas. That's not a failure of planning; it's the planner doing its job and surfacing a real constraint before you've spent money assuming otherwise. Splitting a large collection by scale also has a practical upside beyond fitting the space: each case only needs shelf spacing tuned to one model size instead of a compromise that doesn't suit any of them well.
