Planning a Display Case for a Growing Die-Cast Collection
Nothing deflates the excitement of a new display case faster than discovering, box already recycled, that it holds fewer models than you expected. Getting the sizing right before you buy is mostly a matter of measuring one representative model carefully and doing a little arithmetic — not guesswork, and not the vague "should hold a couple dozen" a listing photo tends to suggest.
Start with one model, not the whole collection
You don't need to measure every piece you own. Pick the widest model in the group you're planning to display — a wide-bodied SUV rather than a compact hatchback, a large-wingspan aircraft rather than a fighter jet — and measure its footprint at the widest point, front to back and side to side. Planning around your widest piece means every other model in the case will fit with room to spare, rather than discovering halfway through arranging a shelf that one oversized model throws off the whole row.
Measuring correctly the first time
A digital caliper is worth the small cost here, because a tape measure struggles with the curved, irregular edges most models have. Measure the model's true footprint — bumper to bumper, wingtip to wingtip — not just the base it stands on, since mirrors, spoilers, propellers, and open doors can extend well past the wheelbase or fuselage and are exactly the details that get chipped when a case is planned too tight. It's worth measuring two or three of your largest pieces rather than assuming the biggest-looking model is actually the biggest; a long, low sports car and a boxy SUV can look similar in size on a shelf but differ by 10–15 mm in one dimension or the other, and that's often the difference between 8 and 9 models fitting on a shelf.
Working out models per shelf
Divide the case's usable interior width by the model's width plus a comfortable spacing gap, and round down — you can't display a fraction of a model. A 900 mm wide shelf with 90 mm wide models and the planner's default 15 mm of breathing room between them works out to exactly 8 models per shelf, not a rough guess: (900 + 15) ÷ (90 + 15) = 6.76, and 8 models at 90 mm plus seven 15 mm gaps come to 825 mm, which is the largest whole number of models that fits inside 900 mm without the ninth one overhanging the edge. That spacing matters more than it might seem: crammed shoulder to shoulder, models block each other's labels and details, while too much gap wastes shelf space you could use for another row.
Stacking shelves to fit a whole collection
Once you know how many models fit on one shelf, divide your total collection size by that number and round up to get the shelf count you need. Multiply the shelf count by each model's height plus enough vertical clearance for the shelf above it — typically 15–25 mm depending on whether a model has raised details like antennas, propellers, or open doors — and you get the total interior height the case needs to hold everything. Compare that figure against the case you're considering, and you'll know immediately whether it fits your current collection, with room to grow, or whether you need a taller case or a second one.
A full worked example
Take a collection of 54 pocket-scale (1:64) cars, each about 71 mm long and 28 mm tall, and a case with a 900 mm wide, 600 mm tall interior. Running those numbers through the display case planner with its default 15 mm spacing and 20 mm shelf clearance gives 10 models per shelf — (900 + 15) ÷ (71 + 15) = 10.63, rounded down — which means the 54-car collection needs 6 shelves (54 ÷ 10 = 5.4, rounded up). Each shelf plus its clearance takes 28 + 20 = 48 mm of height, so 6 shelves need 288 mm total. Against a 600 mm tall case interior, that leaves 312 mm of spare height — more than enough room for the collection to roughly double before the case runs out of vertical space, without needing to rearrange anything.
When the case doesn't fit
Run the same 54-car collection against a shallower case — 900 mm wide but only 250 mm of interior height — and the shelf count doesn't change (still 10 per shelf, still 6 shelves, still 288 mm needed), but now the case is 38 mm short of holding everything. That's a useful failure mode to see before you buy rather than after: a case can be wide enough and still come up short on height once you multiply out how many shelves the collection actually needs. The fix is usually one of three things — tighten the shelf clearance if the models are genuinely low-profile with nothing sticking up, accept fewer, more tightly packed shelves by choosing a wider case that needs fewer rows to hold the same count, or simply look at a taller case to begin with. Whichever you choose, re-running the same numbers through the planner tells you immediately whether the fix actually closes the gap, rather than trusting a guess a second time.
Accounting for outliers
Almost every collection has a few pieces that don't fit the pattern — a limited-edition model with an oversized display base, an aircraft with wings that don't fold, a ship in a long, low case of its own. Plan shelf spacing around your typical models, then set aside a dedicated spot, shelf, or case for outliers rather than trying to force one spacing rule to fit every piece you own. Trying to average everything into a single case size usually means wasted space around the small pieces and a cramped fit for the large ones.
Depth, not just width and height
Everything above covers how many models fit across a shelf and how many shelves stack up, but a case also needs enough front-to-back depth to hold a model without it overhanging the edge. That depth requirement isn't the same dimension as the width used for the per-shelf count: a car displayed broadside, as most collections are arranged, needs shelf depth roughly equal to the car's own width rather than its length, while a single-engine aircraft displayed nose-out needs depth closer to its fuselage length even though its wingspan is what determines how many fit side by side. It's an easy dimension to overlook when a case listing only advertises "fits 1:64 die-cast" without a depth figure, and it's worth checking directly against your own models before ordering rather than assuming every case marketed at your scale has enough clearance front to back.
Material and environment matter too
Beyond raw dimensions, think about what the case is made of and where it will sit. Acrylic cases are lighter and less prone to shattering than glass, which matters if the case will live somewhere with foot traffic or curious pets. A case positioned near a window exposes paint to UV fading over time, and one in a room with swinging humidity — a kitchen, a garage, an uninsulated attic — puts unprotected metal parts at higher risk of tarnish or corrosion over the years. None of that changes the math of how many models fit, but it's worth weighing alongside the sizing decision, since a case is usually a purchase you're making once and living with for years.
Weight is a separate question from fit
Fitting is only half the planning. A case, and whatever it sits on or hangs from, also has to carry the collection's actual weight — and die-cast is far heavier than its size suggests, especially at 1:24 and 1:18. A case sized correctly for 54 large-scale models can still be a problem if it's mounted on a wall bracket that was never rated for that much metal. Leave room to grow
Finally, resist sizing a case exactly to your current collection. Most collectors keep adding pieces, and a case with zero spare capacity means the very next purchase becomes a storage problem. Planning for perhaps 20–30% more capacity than you need today costs little extra and saves a second round of case-shopping arithmetic a few months down the line.
