How the plan is calculated
The planner treats every shelf the same: it fits as many models across the case's width as the footprint and spacing allow, then figures out how many shelves your total model count needs. Stacking that many shelves, each with clearance for the models below, gives the total case height required — which it then compares against the case you actually have (or are shopping for).
It assumes a single row of models per shelf, front to back, which is how most collectors display die-cast, aircraft, and rolling stock so every piece stays visible. If you plan to stack items two-deep, treat the result as a starting point and adjust manually.

How does the planner decide how many models fit per shelf?
It divides the case's interior width by each model's footprint width plus your chosen spacing, and rounds down — you can't display a fraction of a model. Increasing the spacing between models reduces how many fit per shelf but keeps the display from looking crowded.
What spacing and clearance should I use?
15 mm of side-to-side spacing and 20 mm of vertical clearance above each model are reasonable starting points for most 1:18–1:64 die-cast, leaving room to see labels and avoid models touching. Larger models or ones with mirrors, antennas, or landing gear that stick out may need more.
The planner says my case is too short — what are my options?
You can reduce the vertical clearance between shelves if your models are low-profile, choose a taller case, or split the collection across two cases. The 'spare height' or 'short by' figure tells you exactly how many millimetres you're over or under.
